Going Big with Modular

With better materials, larger production facilities and new building technologies, modular buildings can be created on a grander scale and in a time frame that was inconceivable a few years ago. More companies are choosing modular for large-scale building projects on abbreviated timetables, and without disruption to businesses and their employees.

ModSpace recently completed a large modular building project for Iron Ore Company’s mine expansion in Labrador City, Newfoundland. In just 60 days, we delivered an 111,000-square-foot workforce housing complex.

Offsite modular construction allowed the project to be completed quickly despite sub-zero temperatures. The result was a complex of five dormitories, each totaling 22,000 square feet and three stories high. The project kept employees onsite and the company’s mining operation on schedule.

modular office compexIt’s not always workforce housing. Wacker Polysilicon North America in Charleston, Tennessee needed temporary administrative offices for 200-plus employees while its new manufacturing facility was built. Employees were arriving from Germany within months, and the temporary facility had to be ready when they arrived.

We built the 71,000-square-foot facility in 94 days. Some workers were in the building in just 45 days.

Modular ClassroomsThe education sector is also in the mix. Germantown Academy in Fort Washington, PA was replacing its 50-year-old school with a new building for junior and senior high school students. A temporary school was needed for instruction while the main facility was built. The result was a five-building complex made from 66 customized modular units, totaling 57,000 square feet. The temporary classrooms, administrative offices, restrooms and student and faculty lounges were ready before the school year.

Large-scale buildings like these are common for schools, government buildings, industrial facilities and chemical plants. Buildings can be customized to meet individual needs. They’re constructed quickly, so companies are operational and generating revenue sooner.
